How to Ship Scorpions
Step 1 The first step is gathering the supplies. You will need a spray bottle, paper towels, vials, paper, packing tape, and a box. |
Step 2 Fold or tear a paper towel to the correct size. The paper towel should completely cover the sides of the vial. Lightly mist the paper towel with water. If water is expelled when you squeeze the paper towel, then it is too moist. |
Step 3 Next, wrap the paper towel around your finger or a pen and push it down into the vial. This will create a hollowed out area inside the paper towel. The scorpion will be placed inside this hollowed out area. |
Make sure the paper towel is large enough to extend past the top edge of the vial. |
Step 4 After placing the paper towel inside the vial, select the scorpion that you are going to ship. |
Step 5 Place the scorpion inside the hollowed out area. |
Step 6 After placing the scorpion inside the vial, fold the excess paper towel over the top of the vial. |
Step 7 Next, secure the lid on the vial. Also, make ventilation holes in the lid, but make sure that the holes are small enough to prevent the scorpion from escaping. |
Step 8 Place a layer of crumpled up paper in the bottom of the box. Place the vial(s) on top of the paper. |
Step 9 Next, place more crumpled up paper on top of the vial and around the sides to secure and cushion it. |
Step 10 Finally, tape up the box and place a shipping label on it. |
If you are shipping in extreme weather, then you will need to insulate the box by cutting styrofoam that fits inside the box to cover the sides. Also, use a heat pack or cold pack depending on the temperature. Make sure that the heat/cold pack is not in direct contact with any of the vials. Also, wrap the heat/cold pack in paper. It is best to use a heat pack if the temperature is going to be below 40°F (4.5°C). If the temperature is above 90°F (32°C), a cold pack should be used.
If you are shipping large scorpion species (e.g. Pandinus), use small deli cups instead of vials.
